How much do you value your business
They always say action speaks louder than words. That is really true. Some people are in business but they value things that take money away from their business than those that bring money into their business, Of-cause some of you might not agree with me on this one but i have observed this with many business people that i meet.
I remember one day i had a meeting with a friend of my brother. He run a small laundry business. He has great potential to grow his business and make a lot of money. I like his idea because many people do not like washing their clothes because they are always busy or they are renting a house so they are afraid if they leave clothes outside to dry as they go to work the clothes might be stolen so they chose to take their clothes to a laundry facility which cost them a few bucks. So this guy can make a lot of money if he advertise his business well.
So i told him how he could reach out and get more clients if he advertise his business properly. I told him why he needed a website as it is the greatest marketing tool he needed. A website never sleeps and it define your business on the internet. This blew his mind and he was keen to have one so he asked me if webs31 could develop a website for him and how much it would cost. Before i could answer he told me that the business didn’t have money so he needed something cheap.
I told him about the Small Business and Start-Ups Website Contract that we have that is mainly focused on small businesses. The contract covers your complete website development, hosting, emails and email support, and 3 hrs per month website support for only R200 per month. This is also good for non technical people as they can better focus on the core of their business whilst webs31 takes care of their website and company emails.
After hearing the R200 per month he started complaining that it is too much. I looked at him and i asked him how much he is paying for the nokia lumia phone he was holding and he said he is paying R399 per month. Then i asked him how much money is that phone bringing into his business, then he laughed and he said its not bringing anything. Then this is what i said to him
“So you value this phone more than your business. You are willing to pay R399 for a phone that doesn’t bring any revenue into your business but you are not willing to invest your money into a website that will bring you more clients and more revenue. ” I asked him how important his business is to him, and from his answer i could see that his business was the only source of income for him and thats all he had and he was willing to do anything to make his business a success yet he was prepared to pay R399 for a phone and not R200 for his business website. His action spoke louder than his words.
After having said this he looked up and down then he laughed and he said and i quote “You are right, the R200 per month is cheap and worth it, i am taking it. So when do we start.”
Ladies and gents what lesson am i trying to drive from this story. Business people sometimes value other things like cars, phones etc more than their businesses and if you look closely, most of these thing pump money out of the business and yet the business owner doesn’t want to invest into something that brings more customers and revenue into the business. When their business fail then they won’t understand why they are failing. The answer is simple, its bad decision and failure to priorities whats important and whats not. So as a business person don’t fall into such a pit
